Good news for people who love taking selfies! MasterCard is now testing technology that will allow facial verification for online purchases.
The app will allow users to hold up their phone as if they are taking a selfie to approve online purchases. Facial recognition technology has been around for some time now, but it has not progressed to the level wherein it can be used without fear of being manipulated or hacked.
This technology hopes to make facial recognition more secure to ensure that someone is not merely holding up a printed out photo or video or someone else.
At the moment, we have already seen technology where we tap/wave our phone and use our fingerprint to approve purchases. This is seemingly the next step in making it easier for us to buy things online.
The lower the barriers, the more people will spend. Hopefully, people at MasterCard are able to stay one step ahead of people who will look to use this technology to steal and cause harm to others.
